Silversowrd Award

In 2001, the Matsuri Advisory Committee awarded the first Silversword Award for Cultural Excellence. This award will be awarded to members in the community that contributed to the expanding of ethnic/local cultural art. The award is named after the Silversword plant, a rare species of fern that is only found on the summits of Haleakala, on the island of Maui. The plant symbolizes strength and perseverance, something that is required for the development of cultural excellence. For the first presentation, it was presented to Mr. Harry Urata for his contribution to the spreading of traditional Japanese culture throughout the islands and the world.
